BMW has announced a special-edition version of the M140i hatch created specifically for Australia.
Available from April and limited to just 60 units – 15 six-speed manuals and 45 eight-speed automatics – the M140i Performance Edition will be priced from $71,900 plus on-road costs.
That makes it $7000 pricier than the standard M140i five-door (from $64,900), but the limited-edition comes with a number of selected factory-backed M Performance Parts, plus an exclusive individually-numbered plaque.
Mechanical upgrades comprise a performance exhaust system, 19-inch bi-colour Orbit Grey alloy wheels and, for manual versions, a mechanical limited-slip differential and M Performance gear knob finished in Alcantara and carbon-fibre.
All versions come with carbon-fibre mirror covers, high-gloss black kidney grille, rear fins and black roof-mounted spoiler.
Interior upgrades include an M Performance Alcantara/carbon-trimmed steering wheel with stitched red centre marker, M Performance LED door-sill finishers, carbon-fibre trim set and aluminium pedal covers.
Sports seats are standard, trimmed in cloth and Alcantara, although Dakota leather is optional.
There are no changes to the hottest 1 Series' turbocharged 250kW/500Nm 3.0-litre straight six, which drives its rear wheels, making it unique in the small hatchback world.
Like all M140i models, other standard equipment includes Adaptive M Suspension, Variable sport steering, M Sport brakes, Adaptive LED headlights with BMW Selective Beam, Comfort Access, iDrive5 with Navigation System Professional, front/rear Park Distance Control, Speed limit info, Cruise control with braking function, dual-zone climate control, 12-speaker Harman/kardon audio system with DAB+, Bluetooth with extended smartphone capability and ConnectedDrive services.
“We have been very encouraged by the M140i’s performance since it arrived in the second half of 2016,” said BMW Group Australia CEO Marc Werner.
“It is a car with a strong enthusiast following. This Australian M140i Performance Edition builds further on these strengths and its limited production status creates a halo effect for the popular 1 Series range.”
