BMW has taken the unusual step of unveiling performance and styling upgrades for its new G30 5 Series despite the fact it's not due to arrive here in Australia until March 2017.
Developed by BMW M GmbH, the dealer-fit options consist of a sporty bodykit and mechanical upgrades to the suspension, brakes and engine.
The latter engine upgrades are only available with the two six-cylinder petrol engines.
Called the M Performance Power and Sound Kit, on the 540i the aftermarket option boosts power by 25kW and torque by 50Nm. This takes total the output to 265kW/500Nm.
To extract the extra performance from the turbocharged 3.0-litre, the in-line six-cylinder gains an ECU tweak and a sports exhaust that can have its rear tailpipes finished in either chrome or carbon-fibre.
The sports exhaust that's said to provide for a "striking, sporty sound" can also be fitted to the 530i.
Both emissions and fuel consumptions are unaffected by the power increase.
Later on, in the third quarter of 2017, BMW Germany says it will introduce a power kit for the diesel 530d.
The kit, that’s also thought to involve an ECU re-flash, increases power by 20kW and torque by 30Nm, swelling total output for the 3.0-litre turbo-diesel to 215kW/650Nm.
BMW hasn't released performance figures for the more powerful petrol or diesel.
To cope with the extra performance, BMW M has developed more powerful brakes.
Called the BMW M Performance Sport Brakes, the upgrade includes four-piston aluminium callipers and inner vented, perforated brake discs. The M Performance brakes can be identified by their bright red callipers.
For those more concerned about looks than performance BMW M has also created a comprehensive bodykit for the 5 Series. This includes a sportier front bumper, rear diffuser, carbon-fibre rear spoiler and sills.
Topping off the sporty look are carbon-fibre door mirror caps, a black M Performance grille and black brake vents on the front wings.
Large, lightweight, 20-inch wheels also live on the M Performance accessories list.
Inside, the 5 Series' will now get the option of an M Performance Alcantara-trimmed sports steering wheel that incorporates shift paddles for models that come with the eight-speed automatic gearbox.
Pricing for all the new M Performance upgrades is expected to be released in February, when the all-new BMW 5 Series goes on sale in Europe.
