BMW X3 to bring hybrid and M power options
Rapid model expansion mooted for next generation of BMW’s mid-size SUVBMW’s X3 has been available in Australia since 2003 and the second-generation mid-size luxury SUV was released in 2011 before being thoroughly upgraded in early 2014, but big changes are in store for the third generation.
Although the stylistic changes won't be radical — as evidenced by this unofficial rendering of the redesigned MY2017 X3, which is expected to go on sale in Europe in 2016 – the MkIII X3 is expected to undergo massive changes under the skin.
Codenamed G01, the next X3 will be based on a new modular design expected to improve interior space and comfort levels, while under the bonnet there will be far more variety.
There is talk of a plug-in hybrid variant with a 50km electric-only range. It’s expected to house a 67kW electric motor that will work with a turbocharged four-cylinder petrol combustion engine for a rumoured combined output of around 245kW.
If that’s not enough grunt, there should also be a performance-oriented M Performance model, likely to wear the X3 M40i designation and powered by a 3.0-litre turbocharged six-pot producing 255kW-plus.
Rumours out of Europe abound that a full-house M version will follow, along the lines of the X5 M and X6 M. Speculation suggests the same turbo-six from the M3/M4 will be fitted under the bonnet of the first X3 M.
These new X3 variants should be offered alongside two slightly powered-up 'standard’ petrol engines, along with a refined version of the current X3's 2.0-litre turbo-diesel.
