Celebrity chefs support RACV GreenZone Drive

Coffee and pistachio macaroons to go — and no pushing these greens to the side of the plate

The RACV GreenZone Drive is back for a return engagement in 2011. Aimed at enticing drivers to try out the latest low-emission vehicles, the program got off to a strong start earlier this week with a high profile media event featuring famous chefs, Guy Grossi and Shannon Bennett.

Both men are providing a little extra pizzazz for the event; Grossi supplying free coffee to participants and Bennett shouting pistachio macaroons between 3 and 4:00 PM each day.

The GreenZone Drive offers members of the public an opportunity to drive advanced-technology cars gathered in the one place and over a set course. In this way drivers can assess how each vehicle measures up to their own criteria.

“This year we have two zero tailpipe emission cars for the public to drive, the Mitsubishi i-MiEV, which was a huge success last year with GreenZone Drive testers, and the all-new Nissan LEAF, the first small zero emission competitor for the highly popular five-seater hatchback market,” said the RACV's Manager of Environmental programs — and spokesman for the GreenZone Drive — Simon Mikedis.

“Like the Mitsubishi i-MiEV, the new Nissan LEAF is already involved in the Victorian Government’s Electric Vehicle Trial. These two vehicles in particular demonstrate how quickly the industry is moving forward to a zero emission driving future.”

In addition to the two EVs mentioned, two of Honda's hybrids — the Insight and the sporty CR-Z —and a number of diesel-engined cars are also available for test drives.

The RACV is the key sponsor for the GreenZone Drive, which will run from Monday, August 29 to Friday, September 2. Interested drivers can book online at www.greenzonedrive.com.au or in person at the starting point, located at Melbourne's Rialto Plaza, 525 Collins Street.
