There's been a huge amount of hype surrounding the new Chevrolet Camaro Z/28 -- the most potent version of Chevy's latest pony car yet -- but is there a problem with its development?
After all, it's just had a little off-road excursion on the infamous Nurburgring in Germany, a 21km road circuit dubbed 'The Green Hell' by three-times F1 champion Jackie Stewart.
Granted, being a test driver of potent prototype cars on the world's most challenging circuit is no easy task… But the good news is that, incredibly, car and driver weren't badly harmed.
We're not sure whether it was excessive speed or a mechanical failure that caused the crash, but according to our global spy photography supplier Automedia, the test driver walked away with nary a contusion and the car was "hardly damaged".
Either the driver is a better escape artist than Houdini, the car comes with a physics-defying collision avoidance system or perhaps a bit of both… Because the photo of the camouflaged Camaro with its wheels in the air makes it look like it's about to have a spine-jarring stack.
Either way, the production Camaro Z/28 will take on hard-core versions of the Ford Mustang, and will likely pump out close to 500kW – almost 700hp! – accompanied by a sharper chassis, a range of advanced aerodynamic aids and weight-saving measures to ensure mind-melting performance.
Of course there's also an Australian twist to the story, as motoring.com.au has spotted convoys of camouflaged left-hand drive Camaro vehicles near the city of Melbourne in recent weeks, re-igniting speculation that Holden may indeed import the Camaro to take on the sold-out Mustang.
