DELHI MOTOR SHOW: Tata shows off its Holden Trax rival

Indian car-maker reveals budget Nexon SUV that could be on sale Down Under by 2018

India’s car-making giant, Tata, has revealed its rival for the Ford EcoSport and Holden Trax at the Delhi motor show.

Called the Nexon, the small SUV goes on on sale later this year and comes with the option of 82kW/200Nm 1.5-litre turbo-diesel pengine or a new 1.2-litre turbocharged petrol engine that the car-maker hasn’t released any details on yet.

With the option of a six-speed manual or automated manual transmission, the Nexon -- for now -- is only available with front-wheel drive.

Inside, there’s a new 6.5-inch touch-screen infotainment system that’s said to feature voice control and command recognition.

More information on the Nexon is expected to be released closer to its on-sale date later this year.

Vehicles like the Nexon could prove crucial if the Indian brand wants to spearhead a sales offensive Down Under.

Currently, Tata -- which owns Jaguar Land Rover -- only sells the Xenon utility under its brand of the same name in Australia, but that could change since the local distributor, Fusion Automotive, admitted it had plans to import passenger cars in the medium term – perhaps beyond 2018.
