Elio Motors has revealed a new concept at the LA motor show that previews its first ever production car that will be on sale in the US next year.
Called the P5, the new three-wheel Elio is fractionally longer than the previous P4 concept, but is said to have better aerodynamics.
Inside, there’s an upgraded instrument panel and a new iPad holder. Improved seats mounted an inch lower are also claimed to improve headroom.
Still on track to sell for just $9000 when it launches next year, the P5 concept is powered by the same 0.9-litre three-cylinder petrol engine as the last concept, which is said to be capable of hauling the little Elio from standstill to 100km/h in less than 10 seconds. Top speed, meanwhile, is 160km/h.
Most people though will be attracted by its efficiency, with the P5 capable of averaging 2.8L/100km (US highway figure).
According to Elio Motors, more than 47,000 deposits of around $100 have already been placed by potential buyers.
Despite being technically considered as a motorcycle in the US, the three-wheel vehicle is claimed to be designed to have the same safety standards as a conventional car.
That’s why the Elio comes with three airbags, proper seat belts, ABS brakes and a full roll-cage -- despite not needing any of them to comply with US legislation.
Currently Elio says it is focused on launching the car first in the US before it considers other markets.
