Holden slams down 2017 Colorado

Aussie engineering and more gear but same prices for new-look Holden 'truck'

Sporting a bold new look, Australian-tuned suspension and powertrains plus more standard features than before, Holden says its heavily upgraded 2017 Colorado is the best one-tonner money can buy.

Available from September 1, the revised Colorado is not the most affordable ute in its class – arriving with an unchanged price range of between $29,490 and $57,190 – but GM Holden chairman and managing director Mark Bernhard says its trump card is local engineering and claims "there's no better truck on the market".

Unlike some of its competitors, the Colorado doesn't offer a poverty-pack petrol-powered 2WD version priced around $20,000, with all models equipped with a 147kW/500Nm 2.8-litre turbo-diesel delivering the most torque in its class.

That will change when the Volkswagen Amarok V6 diesel arrives later this year, pumping out 165kW/550Nm.

For the 2017 model year, the Colorado receives a new front-end design comprising a fresh front fascia, grille and new headlight styling, complete with integrated LED daytime running lights. The interior is renewed too, featuring a completely new dashboard and instrument cluster, plus new door and seat trims.

Single-cab, space-cab and dual-cab configurations continue on sale, as do six-speed manual and automatic transmissions, and 2WD and 4WD drivetrains. All models have a 3500kg towing capacity with electrical integration (750kg for an unbraked trailer) and payloads start at 1000kg.

Holden has developed a new range of accessories for its strong-selling ute, including flared wheel-arches, side steps plus cargo and towing accessories, and tonneau covers hard and soft.

Standard features for Holden's crucial new one-tonner are plentiful too, extending to a reversing camera, rear parking sensors, digital radio, automatic headlights and remote window-opening for all models.

Seven airbags, stability control, cruise control, a helical limited-slip differential, trailer sway control, power windows/mirrors and both ISOFIX and top-tether child seat anchors (in dual-cabs) are also standard.

Holden has also included its latest MyLink touch-screen infotainment system with advanced smartphone integration, allowing full Android Auto and Apple CarPlay compatibility.

Along with the tech upgrades, recognising the rapidly increasing use of commercial utes as family and weekend vehicles, Holden employed the same engineering team who tuned the VFII Commodore to work on the Colorado.

As such it gets revised suspension and electric power steering systems to make it easier to drive and live with. Changes to the engine and six-speed automatic transmission and improved door seals reduce noise, vibration and harshness, according to Holden.

Holden lead engineer Amelinda Watt said the chassis upgrades, new engine and transmission calibrations and upgraded body mounts improve on-road performance and refinement.

"We can lock the convertor more often and it now feels like you're using the whole 500Nm. It transforms the truck," said Watt.

The Colorado is also covered by a lifetime capped-price servicing program, which costs $349 for each of the first four services, then $409 for the next three services. The service intervals are spaced every nine months or 15,000km. Holden's standard three-year, 100,000km warranty also applies.

Holden says the target market for the new Colorado ute – which it labels a truck now, insisting utes are dead – are "Aussie achievers" aged 35 to 49 years old, essentially middle-aged and married.

In the last 10 years sales of utes in Australia have more than doubled, from around 66,000 vehicles per year to around 132,000 now. After the homegrown Commodore, production of which will cease in little more than 12 months, the Colorado is Holden's biggest seller.

"We had to ensure the Colorado delivered on every level," said Bernhard. "It's a critical product for us."
