Mercedes-Maybach 6 cabriolet previewed

Huge droptop convertible to be unveiled at Pebble Beach; will hint at production version to rival Rolls-Royce Dawn

Mercedes-Maybach has released a new video that teases a convertible version of its Vision Maybach 6 concept it revealed at last year's Paris motor show.

Set to measure more than six metres in length, it's likely the 6 cabrio concept will share the Paris show car's pure-electric powertrain.

That means the 6 will come with four-electric motors powering each individual wheel. Together they generate a total of 550kW.

That's enough to haul the heavyweight convertible to a top speed of 250km/h top speed.

Thanks to an 80kWh lithium-ion battery pack, the range is claimed to be around 500km.

Originally, Mercedes-Maybach claimed the Paris show car wasn't destined for production and was created, instead, as a tool to gauge public interest in a dramatic large luxurious coupe.

Now the evidence of a convertible version suggests the luxury arm of the German car-maker may have found customers willing to stump up for a German rival to the Rolls-Royce Wraith and Dawn convertible.

If so, as well as a pure-electric powertrain, a production version of the 6 is expected to be powered by Mercedes-AMG's 6.0-litre twin-turbo V12.

More teases are expected ahead of the August 16 reveal at Pebble Beach.
