Maybach wows at Bathurst

Former world motorcycle champion, Mick Doohan, gave race fans a sneak peek at one of the stars of the upcoming Sydney motor show last weekend...

Bathurst 1000 race fans have had a sneak preview of one of the stars of the Australian International Motor Show, before its official unveiling at Sydney’s Darling Harbour Exhibition Centre on Thursday (October 13).

The $8m Maybach Exelero concept car completed a series of high-speed demonstration laps around the Mount Panorama circuit on Sunday in the hands of five-time world motorcycle champion, Mick Doohan. The Exelero, which had recorded a top speed of 351km/h on a speed bowl in Italy, exceeded 240km/h down Mt Panorama’s Conrod straight – a speed Doohan described as “cruisey”.

“It’s got a huge amount of get-up-and-go, so reaching that speed on Conrod was effortless,” said Doohan. “I could have gone a lot faster.”

The Exelero is powered by a 5.9-litre twin-turbocharged V12 engine producing 515kW of power and 1020Nm of torque – enough to push its 2.66 tonnes from 0-100km/h in just 4.4sec.

The Maybach Exelero heads a line-up of cars making their Asia-Pacific debuts at the Australian International Motor Show this Thursday. The line-up includes:

  • Jaguar’s all-new XK sports car
  • Aston Martin’s V8 Vantage sports car
  • The Lexus LF-C concept
  • Peugeot’s 407 coupe
  • Alfa Romeo’s Brera coupe
  • Lamborghini’s Gallardo Spyder
  • Mitsubishi’s 380 sedan.

CarPoint will publish live updates from the motor show from approximately 10.00am on Thursday.
