Holden: best in the US for 09?

Holden-built Pontiac G8 is shortlisted for 2009 North American COTY

A Holden Commodore wearing Pontiac badging could be the 2009 North American Car of the Year.

The Commodore-based Pontiac G8, which is built at GM's Holden plant in Elizabeth, South Australia, has been picked as one of 14 semi-finalists by a jury of 47 leading American motoring journalists for the annual North American Car of the Year (COTY) award for 2009. Also included in the short list are Audi's A4, BMW's 1 Series, Cadillac's CTS-V and Jaguar's XF.

The Pontiac has also been selected to vie for other COTY awards in the USA, including Motor Trend's "Car of the Year", Car and Driver's "The Ten Best" and Automobile magazine's "Automobile All Stars".

Holden started exporting Pontiac G8s to the USA early this year (more here).

In 2004, the Pontiac GTO was shortlisted for the North American COTY, while in 2006, the WM Chevrolet (Holden) Caprice won the Best Luxury Car at the Autocar Middle East Awards. The VE Commodore was the only Australian-made car to be nominated among 28 contenders for the prestigious World Car of the Year Awards.

The North American COTY will be announced at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit in January 2009.
