Chinese utes arrive in Oz

Great Wall Motors has launched its ute range - with a sub-$20K starter

Chinese car maker Great Wall Motors has launched two models in the Australian market today, priced from under $20,000. The SA220 and V240 models are petrol powered twin-cab utes priced on the road from $19,990 and $23,990 respectively.

As the first Chinese manufactured and branded models to be sold in Australia, the two utes "offer unparalleled value for money to Australian and New Zealand buyers" says local distributor, Ateco.

Both share visual similarities with Holden's Rodeo/Colorado families. The V240 in particular (the white ute) has more than a passing resemblance to the current Colorado -- at least side on.

The SA220 is powered by a 2.2-litre four-cylinder petrol engine generating 78kW and 190Nm of torque. With a larger 2.4-litre four-pot petrol engine, the V240 ute outputs 100kW of power and 200Nm of torque.

The smaller engined 4x2 SA220 uses a claimed 10.8 litres of petrol per 100km travelled, while the V240 -- which is available in 4x2 and 4x4 -- uses slightly less fuel: 10.7L/100km.

All models are equipped with five-speed manual transmissions.

Ateco says both vehicles offer buyers "superior equipment levels" at a "second-hand price". Standard equipment includes things like electric windows, leather trimmed seats, alloy wheels and air conditioning. Both utes feature independent front and leaf sprung live rear suspension. Deceleration is handled by front disc brakes and rear drum brakes.

Payload for the SA220 is 855kg and the V240 is 1000kg, while towing capacities are rated at 750kg for an unbraked trailer and 1800kg and 2350kg for the SA220 and V240 models respectively.

Ateco's Ric Hull, said: "Great Wall is one of China's leading carmakers and it has been consistently at the top of its domestic car market with its Ute and SUV models. From day one we have been thoroughly impressed with Great Wall. World-class production facilities are becoming commonplace in China and there is no doubt that Great Wall has set a production benchmark."

Great Wall Motors' SA220 and V240 utes will be sold via 45 dealers across Australia and are offered with a three-year/100,000km warranty.
