Just one of the car companies flaunting its environmental sensitivity at this year's Detroit auto show was Fiat, which displayed the plug-in, all-electric BEV version of its 500 model.
The company said little about the "zero emission" (depends on how the power that feeds it is generated) electric 500, except that it is a "technology test bed for future models."
According to Fiat's press release, it "is keeping as quiet as an electric car about what exactly (its) advanced technology is but, save to say, the 500 BEV provides a clear indication of Fiat's commitment to environmentally sustainable transport now and in the future."
The plug-in Fiat 500 retains its four-passenger capacity and builds on the fact that the petrol version is already a leader in fuel economy and exhaust emissions.
The all-electric 500 follows Fiat's announcement late last year that it will introduce an all-new, high-economy, low-emission (less than 90g/km of CO2) 900cc two-cylinder engine in European 500s in 2010.
