Holden's entry in the very busy pick-up market, the new Colorado, is scheduled to arrive here in a matter of months — and after floods in Thailand delayed the new model's local release the company is itching to get back into the segment.

“The new Colorado is a new era for Holden LCVs and will play a vital role in our product renaissance, Holden's John Elsworth was quoted as saying in a press release issued today. "We’re so excited about its performance as a tough, daily workhorse and active recreational vehicle that we wanted to preview the range as soon as possible.”

Elsworth, Holden's Executive Director Sales, Marketing and Aftersales, was unstinting in his praise for the new model.

“This is the most impressive light truck ever designed by General Motors, and we expect it to be a serious challenger in the competitive Australian light commercial market.”

Pre-production models are already running around the country, driven by Holden engineers evaluating the vehicle for the local market. In addition, the pre-production vehicles will be seconded for promotional activities at Holden dealers around the country.

Production models of the Colorado will be available with two four-cylinder turbodiesels, one displacing 2.5 litres, the other 2.8.. The smaller engine produces 110kW of power and 350Nm of torque, while the 2.8 is good for 132kW and 440Nm. Both engines drive through a five-speed manual transmission. And a six-speed automatic transmission will be optionally available at extra cost with the 2.8-litre engine.

“Our diesel-only powertrain strategy means we’ll offer two very competitive, responsive engines that boast impressive towing capacity of up to 3.5-tonne, which we know our customers will love,” Elsworth said.

Built in flood-effected Thailand by Isuzu, the Colorado will come to market in three body styles (single cab, space cab and crew cab). In brief, it will feature hydraulically-assisted rack-and-pinion steering, independent front suspension and rear live axle with leaf springs. Wheelbase measures 3095mm for all three body styles, and ground clearance for 4x4 models tops 289mm. Safety features to be fitted as standard will include ABS/EBD, stability control, dual front airbags and side-curtain airbags.

For the sake of comfort and convenience, standard kit will comprise air conditioning, USB/aux inputs for the audio system, two 12V power outlets, Bluetooth, iPod connectivity and electric windows.
