The electrified e-XIV concept shows an important new direction for the brand, one it says will help keep it at the forefront of eco-friendly vehicle design. The range-extended hybrid combines an 80kW Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor (PMSM) which is supplied by a 16kWh lithium-ion battery.
Ssangyong says that on electric power alone, the e-XIV can achieve a distance of 80km. After that propulsion comes from a 1.0-litre twin-cylinder petrol engine which powers a 20kW generator to provide a range of up to 600km, while emitting only 45g/km of CO2.
The four-seat model’s batteries are topped up via a domestic power outlet that will charge a fully depleted e-XIV in around four hours. Fast charging, where available, does the job in just 20 minutes. Much like the Toyota Prius, solar panels in the sunroof power the air-conditioning, audio system and internal lighting, while driving style and other vehicle settings are adjustable in-car, or via smartphone.
The concept model shared the stage with two production vehicles Ssangyong says will help bolster its European sales, as well as the Actyon Sports utility and Rodius Euro MPV.
Rexton W is the first such offering, arriving with Ssangyong’s new 114kW/360Nm e-XDi200 turbodiesel engine and mated to a choice of six-speed manual or Mercedes-Benz-sourced e-Tronic five-speed automatic transmission. In manual, two-wheel drive format, Rexton W emits 193g/km of CO2, with no word yet on fuel economy.
Ssanyong says the Rexton W is offered with a comprehensive array of safety gear, which includes a triple-layer steel frame, stability control, active rollover protection, tyre pressure monitoring and parking sensors all-round. Standard specification includes ‘eco’ cruise control, memory seat with easy access, USB connectivity and Bluetooth telephony. The model will go on sale in Europe ‘shortly’.
Finally, a petrol-powered version of the Korando crossover mated to an automatic transmission expands the model’s appeal. Following the manual model, which was unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show earlier this year, the auto shares the same 110kW 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine.
The revised Korando also promises improved NVH attenuation thanks to the addition of an acoustic engine cover Ssangyong says “improves refinement and reduces noise levels inside the cabin”. It will go on sale in Europe in Q4 this year (2012).
“We have strengthened our product line-up for Europe with the launch of the premium SUV Rexton W, the petrol-powered Korando with automatic transmission, and the new Rodius Euro,” stated Ssangyong CEO, Mr Lee Yoo-il. “By showcasing the e-XIV, which features many next generation eco-friendly technologies, SsangYong is indicating the future direction for its design and product development. We will continue to be aggressive in the European market to diversify our international markets.”
