BMW will introduce its all-new 4 Series Convertible with two petrol engines and a diesel when it launches its second 4 Series model in January next year.
The eternal four-door convertible favourite has become larger and more rigid in its move from a 3 Series to a 4 Series badge, and it will arrive in 420d, 428i and 435i forms.
The fastest of the family will be the 435i, powered by a twin-turbo straight six and capable of sprinting to 100km/h in 5.6 seconds. It will have 225kW of power from its three litres of capacity and is limited to 250km/h in both topless and fixed-roof forms, but at 1815kg, it will be around 300kg heavier than the 435i Coupe.
The same weight leap carries over for the other 4 Series Convertible models, with both the four-cylinder turbo-diesel and the four-cylinder turbo-petrol models weighing 1755kg, and BMW claims all three variants have the brand’s customary 50:50 weight distribution.
All three variants use a three-piece folding hardtop roof system and BMW will offer neck warmers as options for the front-seat passengers for the first time.
It is longer and wider than its predecessor, with its 4638mm long body sitting atop a 2810mm wheelbase, and it’s 1825mm wide.
While BMW is staying mum, the car will be in Australian showrooms in the second quarter of 2014, with an M4 Convertible to follow around six months later.
