New Nissan-Cummins TDV8 not for Patrol

Collaboration with Cummins brings V8 diesel power to new Titan ute, but won't be seen in Patrol

Nissan Australia says a new Cummins-sourced V8 turbo-diesel for the Japanese brand’s next Titan pick-up in the US will not find its way into the Patrol.

The question of diesel power for the Patrol has been asked ever since Nissan’s new full-size luxury SUV was launched here exclusively with a 5.6-litre petrol V8 in February.

But Nissan has steadfastly denied plans to bless the Y62-series Patrol with a diesel engine, including the Renault-sourced 3.0-litre TDV6 fitted to flagship versions of Nissan’s Pathfinder SUV and Navara ute.

Speaking to motoring.com.au, Nissan Australia General Manager of Corporate Communications, Peter Fadayev, said most buyers are satisfied with the Patrol in its current configuration and ruled out a diesel version any time soon.

“The 5.6-litre petrol V8 fitted to the Nissan Patrol Y62 has impressed many local buyers,” said Fadeyev.

“Should a turbo-diesel engine ever become available for the Patrol Y62, Nissan Australia would certainly assess it for local release. But Nissan Global has already stated it currently has no plan to introduce a turbo-diesel engine for this model.”

Fadayev reiterated Nissan Australia’s previous comments on the matter: that a diesel engine for the Patrol is unlikely given Australia is one of the few markets globally interested in a turbo-diesel option.

Given our comparatively small demand for a diesel-powered Patrol, the return on investment Nissan would need to make the model worthwhile is hard to justify, especially give that the majority of Patrols sold globally go to petrol-focussed markets.

“This is largely driven by the success of this petrol-powered model in countries such as the USA, Russia and the Middle East,” he said.

The Titan’s new Cummins-sourced TDV8 was unveiled at the ‘Nissan 360’ event that kicked off in the US this week.

Nissan says the 5.0-litre unit has been optimised for the next-generation Titan -- a full-size pick-up sold exclusively in the US -- though Cummins adds that the unit will also be developed for its own commercial vehicle customers.

The quad-cam oiler delivers approximately 745Nm of torque and “more than” 225kW. Nissan believes the engine will provide its light truck customers with the kind of towing capacity and fuel consumption expected in the “highly competitive North American truck marketplace”.

“We have done our homework on the next-generation Titan,” said Nissan North America’s Vice-President of Sales and Marketing, Fred Diaz.

“Truck owners told us there's a demand for the performance and torque of a diesel in a capable truck that doesn't require the jump up to a heavy-duty commercial pick-up.

“There is no question that the new Titan will turn heads, and with the available Cummins 5.0-litre V8 turbo-diesel we expect to win new fans and attract buyers looking for this unique configuration.”

Cummins’ 5.0-litre TDV8 will be built at its Columbus Engine Plant, in Indiana, while the next-generation Titan will be produced at Nissan's Canton vehicle assembly plant in Mississippi.

Nissan will not announce launch dates for the new Titan for “competitive reasons”, but says engineering development vehicles are now undergoing extensive testing on public highways across the US.
