SEMA: Mopar revives 'Shaker'

Genuine Mopar 'Shaker' returns for selected Dodge Challenger models

Great ideas always make a comeback and in this case Mopar has revived the genuine engine-mounted through-the-bonnet cold-air intake that ‘shakes’ to the beat of the engine below.

Pulling cold air from above to feed a V8 below, there is real purpose and genuine drama to a ‘Shaker’ intake. More air and more fuel equals bigger bang – the cause and effect is easily understood when anything poking through the bonnet means power and performance.

The Shaker is the ultimate bonnet ornamentation and, as of 2014, will be available as an accessory kit through Mopar’s performance catalogue for North Americans who already own a modern Challenger.

For those who don’t, Dodge offers the new Shaker on the 2014 Challenger R/T Shaker model and the special-order Mopar ’14 Challenger, of which only 100 will be produced.

The Challenger R/T Shaker features a 5.7-litre V8 engine producing over 500Nm of torque, a functional Shaker bonnet cold-air intake, conical air-filter and optimised airbox for improved performance.

The new 2014 Challenger R/T Shaker arrives at US Dodge dealerships in the first quarter of 2014 with pricing starting at $US36,995.

“The legendary Shaker performance hood is back, with its engine-mounted, fully floating scoop and exposed high-flow element that produces cold-air induction – making the new 2014 Dodge Challenger R/T Shaker the real deal,” said Tim Kuniskis, President and CEO of Dodge Brand.

“With Challenger having its best sales-year ever, the time is right to provide our most loyal fans with the return of the Shaker.”

Pietro Gorlier, Mopar President and CEO, claims it wasn’t easy to design and develop a modern Shaker that provided genuine performance.

“We had to satisfy engine noise requirements, safety requirements and emission requirements, and it was difficult and expensive to do but we listened to enthusiasts and we did it.

“The Shaker is a direct connection to Mopar’s performance legacy from the ‘60s and ’70. Being genuine is what Mopar is.”

You’ve got to go back to the original 1970 Challenger R/T to find the first time a Shaker raised its head. For Australians, think Ford Falcon XY GTHO – same idea and same effect.
