Holden’s all-new Trax has been awarded a maximum five-star ANCAP safety rating even before it is officially released this week.
Australasia’s top independent safety organisation has also announced the highest five-star crash performance ratings for Peugeot’s new 208 and the Citroen DS5.
GM’s new city-crossover joins a growing band of pint-size sub-$25,000 SUVs on sale in Australia later this week, and both the Peugeot 208 and Citroen DS5 were launched in Australia last September.
The five-star ANCAP rating applies to all versions of the Trax and five-door variants of the 208 fitted with a four-cylinder engine.
While all three models retain the five-star safety rating they received from Euro NCAP, the MG6 attracted criticism for its sub-five-star result.
“The number of safer, five-star rated cars available to consumers is increasing almost daily -- a trend ANCAP obviously wants to see continue to ensure we can save as many lives and injuries as possible on our roads,” said ANCAP Chairman, Lauchlan McIntosh.
“Consumers now expect new cars to have a five-star ANCAP safety rating, so the four-star rating for the MG6 may be a deal-breaker for some when it comes to making their purchasing decision.”
A Toyota Corolla-sized small sedan and hatchback that has revived the MG brand in Australia, the MG6 was launched here in April.
According to ANCAP, the MG6 provided “marginal” protection from serious leg injury for the driver and front passenger in the frontal offset test, while the driver's airbag did not prevent the head from making contact with the steering wheel.
