Ssangyong's next Stavic fails to surprise

All-new Korean people-mover breaks cover, revealing lacklustre design at odds with recent teaser images

First images of Ssangyong's new Stavic people-mover have been leaked ahead of its official launch by a Korean forum, revealing a lacklustre design that shares very little with the promising sketches released last week.

Expected to arrive in Australia in the third quarter of 2013, the front-end design of the new Stavic bears some resemblance to the Sports Actyon ute.

However, the awkward window design toward the rear flanks appear to have more in common with the widely panned previous generation Stavic than the official sketches teased by Ssangyong.

The Korean car-maker's new minivan is part of a product rejuvenation bank-rolled by Ssangyong's Indian owner, Mahindra.

According to the local distributor's spokesman, Daniel Cotterill, "...Mahindra is investing more heavily in the development of new models and the styling changes that you see with these new vehicles are more mainstream and consistent across the range."

The exterior of the car preserves some of its predecessor's ungainly qualities but it appears Ssangyong has inched forward with interior design, with the unofficial photos showing a high-resolution colour touch-screen (potentially with satellite-navigation) and a digital instrument panel.

All-wheel drive can also be confirmed as the images show a 4WD selector button with 4L, 2H and 4H modes.

Ssangyong has confirmed 3.2-litre petrol and 2.0-litre turbo-diesel engines will be offered with its new people-mover, which appears to be headed to dealerships in Korea as we speak.

It's not clear what engines will power the new Stavic when it arrives in Australia - which is called the Korando Turismo and Rodius in some markets - but the 114kW/360Nm 2.0-litre turbo-diesel engine from the Korando compact SUV is most likely.

In Australia, Ssangyong's key vehicles are the Korando and Actyon Sports ute. The Stavic contributed just 37 units to Ssangyong's 2012 sales total of 920 vehicles.
