Honda Jazz Hybrid breaks price barrier

Petrol/electric light hatch undercuts Prius C by a grand
Honda has lowered the price point for its hybrid range to a new level just a day after announcing the price of its diesel-powered Civic Hatch.
Scheduled for local launch this month, the Jazz Hybrid has one principal target in its sights and, at $22,990, the Jazz Hybrid is a thousand dollars less than the retail price of that target, the Toyota Prius c. Toyota's least expensive hybrid in its range was the previous budget-buy hybrid in the market.
“The Jazz Hybrid is another example of Honda’s commitment to producing fuel efficient engines for fun, stylish and practical cars,” said Stephen Collins, Director and General Manager Sales and Marketing for the importer, as quoted in a press release.
Powered by a 1.3-litre i-VTEC four-cylinder that selectively shuts down cylinders for frugal operation – through Honda's Variable Cylinder Management system – the Jazz Hybrid produces combined output of 72kW and 167Nm from the petrol engine and the electric motor in the car's IMA hybrid-drive system. Torque is directed to the front wheels via a continuously variable transmission featuring Grade Logic Control. An auto idle-stop system and other fuel-saving features (Eco Assist and ECON mode) contribute to fuel consumption that doesn't break through the four-litre threshold as the Prius c does, but is commendably low, nonetheless. Combined-cycle testing has produced fuel economy and CO2 emissions figures of 4.5L/100km and 107g/km respectively.
Comfort and convenience features fitted as standard include 'Magic Seats', rear privacy glass, MP3-compatible CD audio system with remote controls on the steering wheel, Bluetooth/USB/iPod connectivity and an aux jack.
Six airbags (including side curtain) and dynamic safety features comprising stability control, traction control and Brake Assist are also standard inclusions.
Despite the hybrid battery pack, the Jazz Hybrid will accommodate goods in a large boot space measuring 722 litres once the rear seat is folded flat. The said battery pack is covered by an eight-year/unlimited-kilometre warranty.
A chrome blue surround for the headlights, a matching grille, clear red LED tail lights and a chrome tailgate garnish distinguish the Hybrid variant from other Jazz models. Five exterior colours are available: Alabaster Silver, Fresh Lime Green, Rallye Red, Taffeta White and Polished Metal.
