Proton announces specs, pricing for Suprima S

Preve-based hatch due in Australian showrooms from January, priced below $22,000 drive-away
Proton's latest addition to its revamped local product range is the Suprima S, arriving in the Australian market from January next year.
Sharing its underpinnings and mechanicals with the Preve sedan, the Suprima S will be sold here in two levels of trim, the GX and GXR. Pricing, inclusive of on-road costs, starts from $21,790 for the entry-level GX variant, which features a turbocharged 1.6-litre DOHC four-cylinder producing 103kW and 205Nm. Matched to the engine is a continuously variable transmission with seven programmed steps and – for the high-grade model only – paddle shifters. A six-speed manual option will be introduced later in 2014, knocking a further $2000 off the price.
The Suprima S GXR, which is mechanically identical to the entry-level model, is priced at $26,590 – also a drive-away price. Both cars ride on suspension tuned by Lotus, the famous British sports car maker owned by the Malaysian parent since 1996. Passive safety features fitted as standard for both grades include a full complement of airbags (with side-curtain airbags), Brake Assist, Traction Control, Anti-lock Braking with Electronic Brake force Distribution, active front headrests and auto door locking. In addition, safety is enhanced by reverse parking sensors and active hazard warning lights that operate in the event of a collision or during heavy braking from speeds above 90km/h.
Comfort and convenience equipment fitted as standard to the GX variant comprises multi-function steering wheel with audio/phone controls, trip computer and Bluetooth connectivity with USB/iPod porting. Additionally, the GXR variant gains piano black decorative trim, leather upholstery, push-button starting, paddle shifters, cruise control, auto-on/off headlights, reversing camera, front parking sensors, hill-hold assist, rain-sensing wipers and climate control. The car's infotainment system incorporates a seven-inch touch screen, DVD player and GPS/satellite navigation.
Proton is offering the Suprima S for the Australian market with a choice of five exterior colours: Atlantic Blue, Fire Red, Genetic Silver, Solid White and Tranquillity Black. A five-year or 150,000km warranty applies, with free scheduled servicing for the first 75,000km. Roadside assistance is bundled in for the duration of the warranty period and the Suprima S is also covered by a seven-year anti-corrosion warranty.
