Teased: Chevrolet Corvette Z06

Chevrolet to reveal “most track-capable Corvette ever” in Detroit next month

The same day Ford revealed its new Mustang, Chevrolet released the first teaser image of its new Corvette Z06.

Confirmed for global reveal at the Detroit motor show on January 13, the new Z06 is claimed to be the “most track-capable Corvette ever”.

It will be based on the seventh-generation Corvette coupe, which was revealed at this year’s Detroit show but won’t be produced in right-hand drive form.

In fact, the Z06 will top the new Corvetter Stingray line-up and is “designed to deliver supercar levels of performance through unique powertrain, chassis and aerodynamic features”, says Chevy.

The Z06 is differentiated from other C7 Corvettes by an air-vent in front of the rear wheels and a larger brake package with cross-drilled rotors.

But the Z06 is also expected to house up to 485kW under its bonnet bulge, via either a supercharged version of the standard Corvette’s 339kW/624Nm naturally aspirated 6.2-litre V8 or a version of the 373kW/678Nm twin-turbo 4.5-litre V8 from the Cadillac Elmiraj concept.

The previous C6 Corvette Z06 was launched in 2006 with a 377kW/637Nm 7.0-litre Gen 4 LS7 V8, which pushed it to 100km/h in a claimed 3.7 seconds.

The latest Z06 will enter production late next year, when it will join the Corvette Stingray coupe and convertible, as well as the Holden Commodore-based SS sedan (launched in October) and new Camaro Z/28 (due in the second quarter of 2014) in Chevrolet’s performance model range.

“Chevrolet is America’s favorite performance car brand, and for 2014 we are going to offer enthusiasts more choices than ever before,” said Senior Vice-President Global Chevrolet and former Holden chief Alan Batey.

“No other manufacturer will be able to match the breadth of performance cars from Chevrolet.”

The Corvette and Camaro continue to lead their respective sales segments in the US, where the Camaro has outsold the Mustang and the Corvette has outsold its closest competitor, the Porsche 911, so far this year.

“This is all the more remarkable given Corvette production was halted for six months as the Bowling Green, Kentucky assembly plant prepared to build the 2014 Corvette Stingray,” said Chevrolet.

The Australian-engineered Camaro, meantime, looks set to be North America’s best-selling sports car for the fourth consecutive year.
