NEW YORK MOTOR SHOW: SRT Viper TA ready to attack any circuit

Viper TA (Time Attack) limited-edition designed for track-day outings; only 33 units in special ‘Crusher Orange' paint to be built

We drove the new SRT Viper GTS at Road Atlanta last December and came away impressed with the V10 rocket’s pace and driveability.

However, the SRT (Street and Racing Technology) boffins haven’t been twiddling their thumbs since turning out the GTS as now comes a Viper TA (Time Attack) package that’s pitched at enthusiastic drivers who like to “exercise their machines” at one or more of the 150-plus circuits around North America.

The low-volume special -- of which just 33 units, resplendent in ‘Crusher Orange’ paint, will be built and sold -- makes its global debut at the New York motor show next Wednesday (March 27), with US sales due to commence in the third quarter of this year.

Befitting its track-day orientation, the Viper TA gains a host of chassis mods to maximise the performance of the Pirelli P Zero Corsa tyres that are mounted on ultra-lightweight, multi-spoke Sidewinder II wheels.

The tweaks include a two-mode Bilstein Damptronic suspension system that features firmer levels of damping and a smaller spread between modes than what is found on the current Viper GTS models. ??The springs and race-derived stabiliser bars have also been retuned for optimal track performance, while the standard aluminium structural X-brace is replaced with a lighter carbon-fibre brace that effectively ties the four corners of the engine compartment together and contributes to a 50 per cent increase in torsional rigidity.?
The 8.4-litre V10, which kicks out 478kW and 813Nm, has been left untouched as it was hardly lacking in the grunt department in the first place, but the TA gains a bespoke aero package to optimise its high-speed stability.

Body add-ons include carbon-fibre front splitters and a rear spoiler, and there’s also a carbon-fibre rear applique that accentuates the car’s width.

In order to withstand the sustain pounding that comes with track use, the Brembo brakes provide better heat dissipation and the calipers are coated in a black anodized finish with the Viper logo emblazoned on them in Crusher Orange paint.?
The same hue is used on the car’s bodywork, with TA logos behind both front wheels, and a black Stryker logo appears on the front fascia and on the matt-black Sidewinder II wheels. ??Inside, the Viper TA gains unique Crusher Orange accent stitching on the Sabelt racing seats, instrument panel, centre stack, console, handbrake, shifter boot, shifter head, steering wheel and upper doors.

No word as yet on pricing, but we’re guessing the TA’s ultra-low-volume status will see SRT whack on a hefty premium over the GTS.
