Determined to fundamentally change its dowdy image in Australia once and for all, Volvo is understood to have stumped up $6 million for its V8 Supercars championship campaign.
The deal, which will link up local distributor Volvo Car Australia, Volvo’s global performance and racing partner Polestar and the Garry Rogers Motorsport V8 Supercars team, will be confirmed later this morning (Monday, June 17) in Brisbane at the media launch of the S60 Polestar sports sedan (pictured).
Media reports prior to the announcement are speculating about a four-year deal, in which Volvo will contest Australia's premier touring car title in the same way it competes in the Swedish TTA Elite Racing League (pictured).
Volvo’s arrival in the championship, which motoring.com.au uncovered earlier this month, will see GRM campaign two S60 Polestar sedans in the championship, powered by 5.0-litre versions of Volvo’s 4.4-litre V8 engine.
While some media outlets are also speculating the cars will be powered by rebranded Chevrolet V8s, multiple motoring.com.au sources insist Polestar will develop the Volvo engine for V8 Supercars racing.
Motoring.com.au also understands GRM’s current sponsor Fujitsu will stay involved in the program, but significant signage will also be devoted to Volvo Trucks as part of the deal.
The fundamental colour of the race cars will be Polestar blue.
