One of three functioning 1967 Ford Mustang "Eleanors" made for director Dominic Sena's 2000 remake of the 1974 film Gone in 60 Seconds will go up for grabs at Meceum Auctions' Austin collector car auction in the USA starting on December 12.
Of the 12 Eleanor Mustangs built for the 2000 movie by Cinema Vehicle Services, three were fully functional. The auction car is powered by a Ford Racing 351 V8 engine complete with a Holey 700 CFM four-barrel carburettor and a four-speed manual gearbox. It is fitted with a custom body kit, 17-inch wheels, air conditioning, a Lecarra steering wheel and an Auto Meter Sport Comp tachometer.
Going on previous Eleanor auction Mustangs, the car could be expected to bring as much as US $1 million.
The 2000 film starred Nicolas Cage and Angelina Jolie, with former master car thief Randall "Memphis" Raines (Cage) coming out of retirement to steal 50 cars in 96 hours for British crime boss "The Carpenter" to save his younger brother Kip from execution.
The Austin collector car auction will also be putting astronaut Gus Grissom's 1967 Chev Corvette convertible, as well as a 1969 L88 Corvette coupe, under the hammer. Astronauts participating in the US space program were supplied Corvettes by Chevrolet for promotional reasons, as shown in the feature film 'Apollo 13' and noted in the documentary 'James May on the Moon'. Grissom was portrayed in 'The Right Stuff' and was one of three astronauts who later died in an Apollo capsule fire in 1967.
