Indian automotive giant Tata has released its updated 2015 Xenon ute range, which finally gains electronic stability control -- doubling its ANCAP safety rating from two to four stars.
It has also introduced a new ownership program for its utes, dubbed 'Tata Motors Tough Cover' and extending warranty, roadside assistance and capped-price servicing to four years.
The improved safety levels of the Xenon ute are the result of the Australian importer dealing directly with Tata's head office in India to fast-track the adoption of stability control.
The update also brings with it hill hold control and drag torque control, while other safety features such as hydraulic brake assist and electronic brake-force distribution are now also standard.
The Indian company's Xenon ute, which starts at $22,990 drive away for the 4x2 single-cab/chassis (including an alloy tray), was previously criticised for its lack of stability control.
Tata Motors Australia expects the improved safety and new four-year warranty and associated enticements will attract more customers to the brand.
The model year 2015 (MY15) Xenon ute range is now covered by four-year/100,000km factory warranty, along with a four-year/60,000km capped-price servicing regime and four years' free road-side assistance nationwide, as part of the Tata Motors Tough Cover.
The Managing Director of Tata Motors Australia, Darren Bowler, said the new warranty and cover program has been tailored to deliver "class-leading value" and "genuine savings" to Australian buyers.
"By reducing operating costs and providing peace of mind motoring for buyers, we are aiming to enhance the total ownership experience for Xenon buyers," said Bowler.
The capped-priced service schedule starts with a free service at 3000km, then at 15,000km, 30,000km, 45,000km and finally 60,000km, which each cost $385 inclusive of labour, parts and lubricants.
The four year/60,000km regime has a total cost $1540, excluding wear and tear items.
"This program and the sheer size and reputation of the Tata group sets us apart from our competitors in the sub-$30K LCV sector," stated Bowler.
All Xenon utes are powered by a 2.2-litre turbo-diesel engine that generates 110kW/320Nm and consumes a claimed average of 7.4L/100km.
The utes are available in single-cab chassis and pick-up, and dual-cab pick-up body styles, with either 4x2 or 4x4 drivelines. Towing capacities are claimed at 2500kg with a braked trailer, while the vehicle's payload is up to 1080kg.
