Hyundai will build a bespoke eco model to target Toyota's Prius. That's the news according to the Korean arm of respected international news agency, Reuters.
In a report over the weekend, Reuters claimed the new model would be a dedicated gas-electric [petrol-electric] hybrid rather than a variant of an existing model. In this respect at least, the potential vehicle is a direct competitor for Prius.
Reuters quoted Hyundai CEO Kim Choong-ho in its report but cautioned the car boss avoided any direct comments on the Prius-fighter.
"We will take the lead in the future by raising the competitiveness of our environment-friendly cars like hybrid-only cars, plug-in hybrid cars and fuel cell [FCEV] hydrogen cars."
Hyundai recently released a FCEV version of the ix35 in the USA.
