Kia Australia has announced a handful of changes to its Cerato small car, including the addition of the new S Premium model aimed at fleet buyers.
As a rival to the top-selling small cars in Australia, Toyota Corolla and Mazda3, the entry-level Cerato S is available in both hatch and sedan configurations priced from $19,990 with a six-speed manual.
The new Cerato S Premium model slots in above the S model, and is priced at $24,590. As standard it comes equipped as standard with a six-speed auto, a reversing camera, 16-inch alloy wheels, auto headlights, plus a seven-inch touch screen infotainment system with DVD players and satellite navigation – the latter feature increasingly a pre-requisite for fleet buyers.
"The addition of the S Premium grade again underscores Kia’s philosophy that you needn’t go to the top of the tree to find the best fruit," said Damien Meredith, Kia Motors Australia Chief Operating Officer.
The updated, new-look sat nav system is now standard on Si ($28,490) and SLi models ($31,490), and manual transmissions have been deleted on all models except the price-leading Cerato S.
Like the Cerato S, the S Premium version is powered by a 1.8-litre four-cylinder petrol engine that bangs out 110kW/178Nm and drinks fuel at an average rate of 6.6L/100km in the manual. The Si and SLi models get a beefier 2.0-litre direct-injection engine worth 129kW/209Nm, but it's also thirstier, slurping fuel at around 7.4L/100km.
Kia will be hoping to find more fleet buyers with the addition of the Cerato S Premium to its 2015 small range; and all models come with plenty of standard features, including Bluetooth phone and audio streaming, a six-speaker stereo, USB port, front and rear parking sensors, 60:40 split fold rear seat, power windows, keyless remote, plus six airbags, anti-lock brakes and stability control.
"Cerato not only highlights the Kia commitment to safety and value but is one of the most stylish small cars in the Australian market, sharing cues with a range of Kia’s design award-winning models," said Meredith.
The Kia Cerato sedan was third overall in our last mega test of 10 small cars, behind the Volkswagen Golf and Ford Focus.
For the first five months of 2014, sales of the Kia Cerato have risen almost 10 per cent compared to 2013, with 2636 people buying the Korean small car compared to 2399 the year prior.
