When a pair of famous Italian brands comes together, the results are often mind-blowing. But the Lamborghini Aventador 700-4 Pirelli Edition is little more than a unique paint job.
Deliveries for the unique models begin in the European summer of 2015, and prospective buyers will be able to choose the coupe or roadster finished in two different dual-tone paint schemes.
The first one features a matte-black roof and wing mirrors, engine cover and pillars, plus front, rear and side and air intakes. These are juxtaposed with one of six gloss paint finishes for the body, comprising Bianco Isis, Nero Aldebaran, Giallo Spica, Rosso Mars, Grigio Liqueo and Grigio Ater.
The second colour scheme available on the 515kW all-wheel drive supercar is a glossy black finish for the upper parts of the car and the air intakes, instead of the matte finish, which can be matched with four exterior colours: Bianco Canopus, Nero Nemesis, Grigio Adamas, and Grigio Titans.
Lamborghini says the special edition model was "created to celebrate the long and ongoing history of collaboration with prestigious Italian tyre manufacturer Pirelli" and that "The two firms share not only their Italian origins but also, and above all, a constant quest for technological innovation."
Despite all the talk of technological innovation, there is no mention of the new Lambo getting any mechanical changes — not even a specially-developed pair of Pirelli tyres that might help shave a tenth of a second off a lap time around Monza.
The tyres do get red pin striping, however.
It's true that the V12-powered Aventador is not the shy, retiring type of vehicle, powered by a monstrous 6.5-litre 515kW (700hp) that can propel it to 100km/h in 2.9 seconds. With its automatically adjustable rear wing articulating through three settings as it accelerates, it can reach a quoted top speed of around 350km/h.
So what could have been a very special Lamborghini to celebrate a relationship spanning more than half a century is ultimately just a number of very striking colour schemes. Even the Volkswagen Golf GTI Pirelli editions received power hikes and special tyres.
What do you think about the Special Edition — is it 'Special' or could more work have been done?
