BMW has confirmed it will build a seven-seat X7 model at its Spartanburg plant in South Carolina, and the pics published here show the first fruits of the company's commitment.
Expert spy photographers at Automedia happened across this mule, with current 7 Series sheet metal perched on top of an unknown platform. Ballast on the roof gives the game away, presumably aiming to replicate the production SUV's centre of gravity for testing purposes.
While it's possible the platform underneath belongs to the next-generation 7 Series, information to hand suggests it's more likely to be a modified version of the current X5/X6 architecture. Automedia predicts engines available will include six-cylinder, V8, V12 and plug-in hybrid-drive.
According to Automedia, the X7, which was announced back in March by BMW Chairman Norbert Reithofer, will be designed from the outset for light weight and fuel efficiency. Perhaps, the spy photographers suggest, the new model will weigh much the same as the smaller X5 on sale currently, despite being as large as a Mercedes GL. And the X7 could also provide the platform for a mooted Rolls-Royce SUV. In fact, Automedia believes the existence of the X7 basically confirms Rolls will build an SUV also, sharing the platform and mechanicals. The X7 is set to make its global debut in 2018, costing around €128,000 – AUD $186,000 at current exchange rates, and before any local imposts. While BMW Australia is keen to lay hands on the X7, which will reportedly be built in right-hand drive, it's an SUV aimed primarily at the American market, where it will go up against the popular and profitable Cadillac Escalade.
