Freemont Crossroad lands from $36,500

'Elegant and distinctive' new seven-seater Fiat people-mover variant arrives with V6 power and extra tech

Fiat Chrysler Group Australia has announced the arrival of an upmarket new six-cylinder Freemont variant.

Dubbed Crossroad, the high-grade model brings higher equipment levels and an 'elegant and distinctive' new look to what Fiat describes as its 'urban crossover' -- a front-wheel drive seven-seater that accounts for just 1.4 per cent of the fiercely competitive large SUV segment.

The Crossroad pack is adopted from the Freemont's twin-under-the-skin Dodge Journey Crossroad, which has been on sale in the US since the beginning of the year.

Priced from $36,500 (plus on-road costs), the Freemont Crossroad is powered exclusively by a 3.6-litre V6 petrol engine mated to a six-speed automatic transmission as standard. The 206kW/342Nm powerplant is said to deliver a combined cycle fuel economy figure of 10.4L/100km.

In addition to the generous feature list of the standard Freemont, the Crossroad adds a leather-bound steering wheel and gearshift knob, tinted rear windows, 19-inch Hyper Black five-spoke alloy wheels, electrically-adjustable and heated black leather upholstery, heated and folding wing mirrors, an electrochromatic rear-view mirror, a foldable passenger seat with storage compartment, rear parking sensors, automatic headlights, a reversing camera, keyless entry and start, and Bluetooth connectivity.

With an upgraded 8.4-inch U-connect media centre including touch-screen satellite-navigation, the Freemont Crossroad is further enhanced by an Alpine audio package adding CD/MP3 playback, DVD/SD player and a 368-Watt amplifier with subwoofer.

The Freemont Crossroad is identified outwardly by platinum chrome roof-rails, bumper inserts and side skirts, and a gloss-black grille, foglight surrounds and front and rear light frames. On the inside, there are sports mesh inserts on the seats, plus light Ardesian-grey stitching and liquid graphite garnishes on the dashboard, instrument panel, centre console, door cards and steering wheel.

Fiat backs the Freemont with a three-year/150,000km warranty and roadside assistance program, but does not offer capped-price servicing. Standard Freemont variants are also offered with the choice 2.4-litre petrol and 2.0-litre turbo-diesel power. The Freemont receives a four-star ANCAP safety rating (tested based on diesel variant).

2014 Fiat Freemont pricing (plus ORCs):
Base 2.4 -- $27,000
Urban 2.4 -- $29,000
Urban 2.0 -- $33,000
Lounge 2.4 -- $32,000
Crossroad 3.6 -- $36,500
