As we've previously reported, the facelifted Mercedes-Benz ML-Class will be called GLE upon its 2015 release.
Automedia has snapped fresh images of the GLE undergoing testing at the Nurburgring, showing a single-bar front grille along with redesigned headlights and DRL bars. The 'character lines' running the length of the vehicle have also been altered.
It is believed the GLE 400 will be powered by a bi-turbo 3.0-litre petrol V6, while a plug-in hybrid variant derived from the upcoming C-Class PHEV is on the cards as well. Also expect updates to existing petrol and diesel drivelines, with the AMG variant to boast the 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 shared with the AMG GT and new C 63.
The fresh name provides a better tie-in with Mercedes-Benz's existing SUV offerings, including the large GL-Class, upcoming mid-size GLC-Class, which replaces the GLK and will sit on the C-Class platform, and small GLA-Class. It also indicates its E-Class based roots. In addition, Benz is understood to have commenced development of (four-door) coupe versions of the GLE and GLC, to rival BMW's X6 and X4, respectively.
Like the facelifted, renamed model on which it's based, the GLE Coupe is also expected to arrive in 2015.
