SPY PICS: Mercedes-Benz GLC-Class

Out with the GLK, in with the GLC as Benz's model expansion plans continue apace

Revealing new images of the new-generation GLC-Class medium SUV have emerged, showing a smooth new exterior design that straddles a line between Mercedes-Benz's largest and smallest SUVs.

Based on the same platform as the new C-Class (W205) and available in right-hand drive, the new GLC is expected to arrive in Australia in 2015 and will seal a gap in the German brand's range that has allowed the BMW X3 and Audi Q5 to romp away with in the sales race.

The new model replaces the angular GLK model that was never sold in Australia, and based on looks alone will certainly give the Q5 and X3 a run for their money. Although the car in question is covered in psychedelic camouflage, elegant almost sporty lines are clear to see.

Slightly flared wheel arches provide an athletic stance as do integrated twin exhausts, and a contemporary, curved take on the headlights appear to mimic the new C-Class. Indeed, much of the car's design adheres to the design language seen on the C-Class.

The Mercedes GLC-Class in the photos is fitted with a sports bodykit and large alloy wheels but it should be noted that Benz is also planning a coupe-like version of the GLC with a more curved roof, designed to compete with the BMW X4.

The swoopy GLC coupe isn't expected to lob until 2016-17.

A clear photo of the interior shows the cabin is almost identical to the new C-Class. That's no bad thing considering how well  the sedan presents.

Engine-wise, the GLC is likely to benefit from all the powerplants available in the C-Class, including the 2.1-litre turbo-diesel engine and 2.0-litre turbo-petrol. There's also a chance for a bit of AMG love, though whether that results in full eight-cylinder experience remains to be seen.

The new GLC is part of an SUV onslaught that will see Mercedes-Benz launch a number of new models in 2015, include a reborn M-Class that will get a name change to GLE, to link it with the E-Class.
