GoPro control now via MINI

New app allows MINI drivers to operate GoPro cameras from their dashboard

MINI has become the first brand to allow its customers to operate GoPro cameras directly from the dashboard of their cars.

The new remote camera control technology comes via a free app that will be available for iPhone users to download from the Apple App Store from this month.

GoPro users have long been able to control their mini action cams remotely via an i-device app, but the British car-maker says the new MINI Connected app will now make shooting a movie as easy as choosing a song or adjusting the air-conditioning.

Like the GoPro iPhone app, the MINI app allows users to start shooting video with a camera mounted on or inside the car while travelling.

The difference is the MINI app offers control via the car's infotainment system, without needing to touch their phone while driving on a public road, which in all Australian states is an offence.

"The functionality is intuitive, convenient and, most important of all, safe," says MINI.

"With the new app, MINI drivers will be able to concentrate on finding the ideal line while having fun on the racetrack."

Minimising distraction, GoPro camera functions can be operated from either the high-resolution colour display in the centre of the dash, the MINI Joystick or the MINI Touch Controller.

The only proviso is the car must be fitted with the MINI Visual Boost Radio and MINI Connected or MINI Connected XL options package.

The integration of the app inside the vehicle’s operating system is handled through the driver's iPhone, while a WLAN connection is maintained between the GoPro camera and iPhone.

The app offers the choice of video and single-image shots, as well as a photo series mode with short or long interval options. There are also options to maximise image quality in various driving situations such as night time or cornering.

The camera can also be switched on and off using the MINI’s centre console, and the screen can also display remaining camera battery charge and remaining recording capacity.

The system can also display a preview image of the camera's perspective, but only when the vehicle is stationary.

BMW's small-car brand says the MINI Connected ready App demonstrates the capabilities of the MINI infotainment system, which can be supplemented by a growing number of apps designed specifically for the MINI by third-party developers.

Apart from built-in services such as web radio, RSS news feeds and social media including Facebook, Twitter and foursquare, apps available for the MINI Connected system also include Glympse, AUPEO!, Stitcher, Deezer, Audible, Napster, TuneIn and the Amazon Cloud Player.

These are in addition to exclusive online search and functions like Driving Excitement, Mission Control, Dynamic Music and MINIMALISM, as well as the new MINI Connected XL Journey Mate, which allows interactive travel planning and support for Real Time Traffic Radar.
