McLaren has pulled the wraps off its P1 GTR 'design concept' at the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance this weekend.
Joining the 650 S Sprint at its California debut, the £1.98 million (AUD$3.5m) hypercar – which is available exclusively to existing McLaren P1 owners – is a track-focussed version of the road-going model. It makes 735kW (up from 673kW) and is capable of lapping the Nurburgring in "under seven minutes". Not restricted by road-car regulations and emission controls, the P1 GTR features more aggressive aerodynamics – which also serve to improve cooling – a wider front track (+80mm) and specially-developed slick Michelin tyres, as well as a higher-performance iteration of McLaren's mid-mounted 3.8-litre twin-turbo V8 hybrid.
An enhanced Instant Power Assist System (IPAS) drivetrain and bolstered ERS (Energy Recovery System) push-to-pass system, similar to that found in F1, will give the P1 GTR a greater advantage on the track.
The P1 GTR's titanium alloy twin exhaust outlets are routed to exit between the tail-lights, which sit below a mammoth hydraulically-controlled rear wing. It rides on 19-inch quick-release centre-locked wheels measuring 13 inches in width at the rear and 10.5 up front. They're tucked within flared wheel arches, and pushed groundward by even lower, non-adjustable suspension. The whole car can be raised on air jacks to improve wheel change times.
The purchase price includes access to McLaren driving events at circuits the world over, and "specialist vehicle support" from McLaren Special Operations, just in case you should need it. McLaren will also offer P1 GTR owners access to its racing simulators and expert driver tuition.
Production of the McLaren P1 GTR will begin next year (2015), only after the 375th example of the 'regular' P1 has been completed. It is expected only 25-30 examples will ever be built.
