Benz S-Class Coupe for Motorclassica

Mercedes confirms Australian debut for two-door S-Class in Melbourne this week

Mercedes-Benz staged the Australian debut of its new S-Class limousine at Motorclassica 2013, and now it has announced it will reveal the two-door version at this year's show, which starts on Friday.

The new S-Class Coupe won't be the only reveal from Mercedes, however, with another surprise due to be unveiled at Melbourne’s Royal Exhibition Building ahead of the October 24 opening day.

For now, Mercedes is keeping mum on what is expected to be its second Australian debut this week, but it's clear the German luxury brand has embraced what has become an important annual event on the Australian automotive calendar.

“Motorclassica again hosts the premiere of one of our new vehicles, the beautiful S-Class Coupé,” said Mercedes-Benz Australia/Pacific CEO, Horst Von Sanden.

“Motorclassica is truly a unique event within Australasia and presents the perfect opportunity for car enthusiasts to take pleasure in viewing both classic and contemporary vehicles.”

Mercedes-Benz is also staging the GLA 45 AMG local launch this week in conjunction with Motorclassica 2014, where it will show a special heritage exhibition vehicle to reinforce the brand’s historic credentials.

Due on sale in Australia next February, the new S-Class Coupe range will be topped by the S 65 and S 63 AMGs – the latter powered by Mercedes-AMG's 430kW/900Nm 5.5-litre biturbo V8.

“Mercedes-Benz blazed a trail last year as the first manufacturer to utilise Motorclassica to reveal a contemporary model and, such was its success, the company immediately advised us they wanted to repeat the experience this year,” said Motorclassica Event Director, Paul Mathers.

“We’re delighted to welcome them back and to also welcome an increased number of contemporary heritage car and motorcycle brands to the event, a recognition both of the credibility of Motorclassica and the engaged audience we attract.

“It’s a tremendous way for manufacturers to present their current wares on a platform that also presents the history of their brands.”

Apart from Mercedes-Benz, this year's Motorclassica will host historic brands Jaguar, Maserati, Alfa Romeo, Aston Martin, Caterham, Morgan and Lotus, along with motorcycle displays from Triumph, Indian, BMW, MV Augusta and Benelli.

Organisers say more than 500 cars and motorcycles will be on show both inside the Royal Exhibition Building's 19th century halls and in the adjacent Lorbek Luxury Cars-supported ‘Club Sandwich’ club displays.

Many of them will take part in Tour Classica, which kicks off the weekend on Thursday morning (October 23) with a tour of Melbourne streets between the Melbourne Zoo and the Royal Exhibition Building.

Saturday night will also see the annual Motorclassica collector car auction, conducted by Australia’s oldest auction house, Theodore Bruce.
