Five-door MINI for under $28K

A mainstream MINI for modern mums, dads AND kids is set to arrive next month
MINI has issued pricing for its new five-door model, which goes on sale locally from November 1.
The new body style starts from $27,750, nearly $4000 less than the previous generation three-door MINI. That will buy the entry-level five-door MINI Cooper model, powered by a 1.5-litre 'TwinPower' turbo-petrol engine, coupled to a six-speed manual transmission.
Also displacing 1.5 litres, but a diesel, the MINI Cooper D is priced at $32,900, and the range topping MINI Cooper S remains well under $40,000 at $38,050.
Standard features at entry level include air conditioning, electric windows and mirrors, automatic windscreen wipers and lights, dynamic cruise control, Bluetooth connectivity, audio system with USB and Aux input, keyless start/stop, rear Park Distance Control, six airbags, interior LED ambient lights package and rear fog lights. The entry-level model rides on 15-inch wheels.
MINI Cooper D also features 16-inch wheels, dual-zone climate control, 6.5-inch infotainment screen with single-point controller, extended Bluetooth with music streaming, front fog lights and front armrest as standard. The range is capped by the MINI Cooper S, with 17-inch wheels, leather/cloth combination upholstery, front sports seats and satellite navigation.
Active safety features comprise stability and traction control, an electronic differential lock, Brake Assist, Electronic Brake Force Distribution and Cornering Brake Control.
Power and torque figures for the base MINI Cooper are 100kW and 200Nm respectively, with combined-cycle fuel consumption as low as 4.9L/100km.
MINI has timed the Cooper S at 6.9 seconds for the 0-100km/h time – or 6.8 with the automatic – thanks to the 141kW/280Nm output from its 2.0-litre engine, which also conserves fuel to the tune of 6.0L/100km with the automatic optioned.
Moving up to the Cooper D, the diesel engine produces 85kW and 270Nm for fuel economy as low as 3.8L/100km when driving through the manual transmission.
Built on a longer wheelbase (2567mm), the five-door MINI is bigger in most dimensions than its three-door counterpart and provides a roomier interior and more luggage space.
Overall length of 3982mm for the 1.5-litre variants is 161mm greater and Cooper S is longer still, at 4005mm. At 1425mm the five-door model tops out 11mm higher than the three-door, delivering an extra 15mm of headroom. The longer wheelbase (2567mm) translates to 72mm more rear-seat legroom, and while boasting the same external width of 1727mm the five-door is wider inside too, by 61mm at elbow height. At 278 litres, the luggage capacity of the five-door is 67 litres larger in volume than the three-door's.
"With more space for five occupants and their luggage, the new MINI five-door is the perfect premium small car for the family or those whose lifestyle requires extra interior space and flexibility," said Kai Bruesewitz, MINI Australia GM, as quoted in a press release.
"At the same time, it maintains MINI's characteristic contemporary styling, refined performance and sensational driving dynamics."
