Suzuki has lifted the lid on the successor for its pint-size Alto city-hatch, the Celerio, an all-new global A-segment five-door that’s destined for Australian showrooms in the first quarter of next year.
Europe’s version of the Celerio, which will closely mirror the model we see here in early 2015, emerges just a day after India’s version made its world debut at this week’s Delhi Auto Expo.
Both Celerio production models feature subtle styling differences to the show car that previewed them, the A:Wind concept at the 30th Thailand International Motor Expo in Bangkok last November.
Other than claiming it will offer “an outstandingly roomy interior for an A-segment car as well as class-leading low CO2 emissions”, Suzuki has revealed no information about the European Celerio ahead of its reveal at the Geneva motor show on March 4.
However, the A:Wind was 100mm longer than the Alto at 3600mm and rides on a 75mm shorter (2425mm) wheelbase, while width is unchanged at 1600mm and height increases by 70mm to 1540mm.
Power should continue to come from a 996cc petrol engine, matched with a continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT).
Suzuki has previously confirmed the Celerio will be produced in Thailand for export globally, potentially spelling even better value than the Indian-built Alto since Thailand is closer and has a free-trade agreement with Australia.
The Alto pioneered the growing sub-light A-segment in Australia in August 2009 and continues to be one of the country’s cheapest new cars with a starting price of just $11,790 plus on-road costs.
Its successor will arrive Down Under around the same time as the production version of the all-new iV-4 crossover, which is based on the same new platform as the S-Cross SUV released here last month.
Before then, Suzuki Australia will release an upgraded version of its trusty Jimny 4x4, complete with electronic stability control, by around October.
