Subaru BRZ Special Edition lobs

Up to $9000 worth of claimed extra value for new limited-edition Subaru sports coupe

Subaru says it has no plans to produce a higher-output STI version of its BRZ boxer coupe, despite the fact Toyota will reportedly soon release an STI-spec version of its 86 twin, so for now this is the closest thing to it.

Released today in Australia, the new BRZ Special Edition adds a number of cosmetic upgrades, but bumps up the price of the entry-level BRZ by $3500, to $40,650 drive-away.

Subaru reckons it delivers an extra $9000 worth of value, however, by adding GT stripes and a rear diffuser, plus numerous addenda from the Subaru Technica International parts bin, including STI-branded 17-inch alloy wheels, a boot lip spoiler, and matt-black front, side and rear spoilers.

Inside, the BRZ SE cabin offers an STI push-button engine starter and short-throw gearshift assembly for manual models. Automatic models get an STI shift knob.

No changes to the car's chassis or driveline have been made for the new model, which continues with a 147kW/205Nm 2.0-litre four-cylinder boxer petrol engine.

Naturally, however, the special-edition rear-drive coupe gets all changes bestowed on the 2015 model year BRZ, which is priced at $37,150 plus on-road costs and brings suspension tweaks, new interior accents and an updated colour palette.

Deliveries of the Special Edition BRZ will begin in November and, like the mainstream BRZ, is available to pre-order via dealerships and Subaru's special online sales portal, https://buyonline.subaru.com.au.

The BRZ and 86 were strong sellers when launched in 2012 but their popularity has waned, with sales of both models dropping by around a third year on year.

Naturally, models like the Special Edition and the extra value they bring are designed to rekindle interest.

"This Special Edition represents tremendous value as it combines the recently announced MY15 enhancements, including suspension tweaks, with some fantastic kit that only adds to its outstanding on-road presence and reputation," said Nick Senior, Subaru Australia Managing Director.

Although neither Subaru nor Toyota offer performance packages for their affordable compact coupes, aftermarket tuners such as MRT offer Cosworth tuning kits for those wanting more spice.
