SPY PICS: BMW X2 caught testing

Junior crossover to provide Beemer with more SUV ammo in global sales race

New images of a top-secret BMW test mule have been snapped in Europe, showing what motoring.com.au believes to be the X2.

Although visual details are difficult to discern due to the camouflage, it seems likely the new BMW X2 will feature an athletic front-end, dominated by sleeker headlights than the X1's and shorter, sportier overhangs too.

As well as more assertive body styling, the X2 appears to have a lower ride height and the way the roofline tapers down towards the rear end will provide more stylistic punch.

Interestingly the windscreen appears to be more upright than the X1's and according to the Automedia spy photographers the cabin looks nothing like the BMW X1 small SUV either.

This has lead to some conjecture that the X2 could be called the 1 Series Sport Cross or something along these lines, so as not to dilute the SUV-focussed 'X' family. Viewed from the rear-side the vehicle also looks more like a compact wagon with a lengthened boot, suggesting cargo space will be above average.

In May 2015 BMW sources confirmed to motoring.com.au that a new coupe-like SUV would join its ranks by 2018, although based on the images snapped here it could that the vehicle has been fast-tracked.

BMW has obviously learnt its lesson from the slow-selling MINI Paceman – and seen the writing on the wall via Range Rover's unloved three-door Evoque – and decided to include a modicum of practicality, hence a five-door layout for the vehicle.

Rivals for the new model will include the hot-selling Mercedes-Benz GLA and like that model this new BMW X2 will be offered in front- and all-wheel drive.

Likely based on BMW's new front-drive architecture, UKL, which also underpins some current generation MINIs, the new model will be offered with similar engines. Think turbo-petrol and diesel 1.5-litre three-cylinder donks, not to mention plug-in hybrid options as well.

Will there be a hard-charging M variant? Impossible to say at this stage but a slightly less manic 'M Performance Automobiles' version designed to rip into Benz' GLA 45 AMG is not out of the question.
