More HiLux interior pics, details

New Toyota LCV gets a touch of SUV comfort, but without sacrificing durability

Toyota has today issued new images of the cabin for the next-generation HiLux due to go on sale in Australia from October. And the company has also outlined most of the model walk-up for the new LCV range in Australia.

According to Toyota, the new HiLux will be internally larger than the model it replaces, providing more headroom and shoulder room in front. Seat comfort is enhanced too, with a larger range of height adjustment, and the driver is seated behind a wheel adjustable for reach and rake. Extra-cab and dual-cab variants gain more rear-seat kneeroom, with SR and SR5 dual-cab models featuring a 60:40 split-folding seat in the rear and a stowable armrest.

Looking a little like an afterthought, a 6.1-inch tablet-style display in the centre fascia takes the infotainment and reversing camera feed for all variants. The display is a touch screen that is considerably larger than the superseded model's infotainment display, and is within easy reach of both the driver and the front passenger, Toyota claims.

A multi-function steering wheel will support voice recognition and audio system adjustment – including music streamed from a Bluetooth-compatible smartphone. Bluetooth connectivity and CD are integral components of the two-speaker audio system in even the entry-level HiLux WorkMate.  SR models are equipped with just two speakers in single-cab variants, four in extra-cab variants and six in dual cabs. Similarly the HiLux SR5 extra-cab models pipe sound through four speakers, but the dual-cab HiLux SR5 comes with six speakers and digital radio (DAB+). Additionally, the flagship (SR5 dual-cab) HiLux variants are equipped with a seven-inch touch screen and Toyota Link, a connected mobility system for Pandora users. Toyota Link can also find a service station or other destination and provide the user with weather information.

The SR comes with a trip computer display in the base of the instrument binnacle. This is upgraded to a 4.2-inch format for the SR5 models, which also feature a 220-Volt connector for camp fridge or other high-voltage accessories. All variants come with a 12-Volt outlet, but the SR5s also come with a second 12-Volt outlet.

The flagship models are also equipped as standard with keyless smart entry and start, climate control, chrome door handles, premium steering wheel and shift knob, upgraded instrument cluster with 'cool blue' illumination, an alarm, auto headlight levelling and silver highlights throughout the interior.

Comfort and convenience features for the HiLux include air conditioning across the board, cruise control, intermittent wipers and electric windows/mirrors/door locks.

WorkMate models, designed for tougher work environments, are trimmed in fabric now, rather than the vinyl seat upholstery of the previous models. Floor mats continue to be vinyl in this grade, but the SR and SR5 levels of trim feature carpet and a premium-grade seat upholstery. Available as an option in SR5 turbo-diesel 4x4 double cab variants are seats trimmed in leather with seat adjustment in front.

The pictures clearly show a heated/cooled box above the glovebox for keeping two 600ml bottles chilled or warm.

All up, the new HiLux will offer 31 different variants, split between four new engines (two turbo-diesel, two petrol), three transmissions, 4x2 or 4x4 final drive configurations, three body styles and three levels of trim. HiLux 4x4 models allow the driver the facility to make transfer case selections electronically – by means of a dial just left of the instrument binnacle – and the SR and SR5 grades also gain an electronically-lockable rear differential.

Safety features comprise a reversing camera for pick-ups (available as a dealer-fit accessory for cab/chassis models), seven airbags, stability/traction control/ABS and an emergency stop signal (flashing brake lights). Seatbelt reminders are linked to front seats for all variants, and additionally the rear seats in dual-cab models. Dual-cab models feature top-tether anchorage points and ISOFIX attachments for the two rear/outboard seats.

"New HiLux is more unbreakable than ever with a stronger frame and body, new high-torque diesel engines, rugged yet advanced exteriors and spacious interiors that combine modern features with durable designs," said Tony Cramb, Toyota Australia's executive director sales and marketing.

"Even workers in tough industries like mining, building and farming want the space, ergonomics, technology and ride comfort of the new HiLux interiors – and so do their families," he said.
