VW unveils new Caddy Maxi

Volkswagen's new longer-bodied Caddy Maxi made its world debut at the Geneva Motor Show last week

Hot on the heels of the premiere of its fourth-generation Caddy, Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles chose the 2015 Geneva Motor Show to reveal the compact commercial's new long-bodied sibling, the Caddy Maxi.

In Europe the new Caddy Maxi has been released with five engine options: three 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo-diesels ranging from 75kW to 110kW, or two petrol engines – either a 1.0-litre three-cylinder boasting 75kW or a 1.4-litre four-cylinder with a claimed 92kW. Mated to either a manual or DSG auto transmission, all engine formats comply with the Euro 6 emissions standard.

With a wheelbase that is 32cm longer than the standard Caddy, the Caddy Maxi features two additional and removable rows of seating behind the driver's and front passenger's seats. With all the seating in place VW says the vehicle has a cargo capacity of 530 litres, but this expands to 1350 litres with the third row seating removed and 3700 litres with both rows removed.

The Caddy Maxi has a cargo volume of up to 4.7 cubic metres, versus 3.2 cubic metres for the standard Caddy, and has a maximum payload of 1005 kilograms.

Autonomous emergency braking comes standard on the new Caddy Maxi (as it does on the shorter Caddy), while the options list includes radar cruise control, a reversing camera, an automatic park assist system and VW's Driver Alert system. The latter detects "deviations from normal driving behaviour" and warns the driver to take a break.

The new Caddy Maxi shares its refreshed exterior with the new Caddy, sharing sharper contours and a more dynamic front end complemented by new front and rear lights.

Volkswagen's Caddy truly dominates the sub-2.5-tonne commercial vehicle market in Australia, the 1855 new registrations the nameplate recorded in 2014 giving it a dominant market share of 55.9 per cent.

Volkswagen will be hoping the arrival of the new Caddy and Caddy Maxi will give the brand renewed vigour in the Australian market, as it attempts to thwart the progress made over the last 18 months by its closest rival, Renault.

The French manufacturer has made great strides in recent times with its renewed Kangoo range, which posted sales growth of 79.5 per cent last year over 2013, while also posting substantial gains with its larger Trafic and Master models.

Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles says the new Caddy Maxi will go on sale
in Germany from June 2015, priced from Euro 18,590. The model is
expected here in the fourth quarter of 2015, with local pricing and
specifications still to be confirmed. We'll bring you more information
