Ferrari working on wild 567kW F12 Speciale

Italian super-sports car to shed 200kg while 6.2-litre V12 gains 22kW. Will monster Aventador SV with sub-3.0 second 0-100km/h time

Ferrari is plotting a new lightweight, more extreme version of its F12 flagship that will see the two-seat supercar lose weight and gain power in a bid to outgun Lamborghini’s Aventador LP750-4 Superveloce.

The revelations that Ferrari will once again use the ‘Speciale’ nameplate introduced by the smaller 458 supercar was, made by British car magazine, Autocar.

Previously, when the hard-core F12 was spied testing and then apparently leaked via an official image, our sources had indicated it would use the GTO name that Ferrari previously applied to its hard-core 599 in 2010.

According to Autocar, engineers have managed to carve an incredible 200kg from the standard road car and the new F12 Speciale will weigh in around 1430kg.

Small engine tweaks have also risen power from current car’s already mighty 545kW to a monstrous 567kW.

This will provide the big Ferrari with an incredible power-to-weight ratio of 396kW per tonne, giving it a huge advantage over the Lamborghini Aventador SV (362kW) and helping it match hypercars like the Porsche 918 Spyder.

The big issue, for the Italian car-maker, is translating all that power into traction as the F12 remains rear-wheel drive. Even so, expect the big Speciale to take less than three seconds to reach 100km/h and for it to easily exceed 340km/h.

To help it cope with the big jump in performance engineers are believed to be working on a new more aggressive suspension tune and a completely redesigned aero package that uses all the new air-bending tricks developed on the LaFerrari and recent 488 GTB supercar.

Inside, the F12 will have a stripped-out interior and will offer the option to delete the air-conditioning for even more weight-saving.

According to Autocar, the F12 Speciale is set to be the very last normally aspirated, non-hybrid Ferrari ever to be offered by the Maranello-based firm.

Apparently, it will also become a full-time Ferrari model rather than a limited-edition when it's officially revealed, which is likely to be at the Frankfurt motor show in September.

Pricing, in Europe, is expected to start at around $600,000, but it will command a handsome premium over the range-topping $690,645 price of the standard F12 Berlinetta in Australia.
