The new Ferrari Land in Spain looks set to open in 2017, and for many petrol heads it will be the happiest place on earth. With construction on the $147 million project beginning this week, Ferrari F1 driver Sebastian Vettel and team principal Maurizio Arrivabene set the ceremonial "first stone" for the big red venue.
Joining Ferrari World in Abu Dhabi, Ferrari World Spain will allow punters to not only sleep in a Ferrari hotel, but also experience the stomach-wrenching acceleration F1 drivers feel. One of the most recognisable attractions will be a 112-metre (367 feet) tall tower, or vertical accelerator, that claims to deliver 0-180km/h in 5.0 seconds flat.
Located roughly 100km from Barcelona inside the PortAventura resort, a number of high-tech car simulators will be offered, but it's not clear what other pulse-pounding rides will be constructed at Ferrari Land.
Roller coasters and a replica go-kart track or two are expected however.
There will also be a number of attractions for conservative tastes, with developers stating the theme park will be a family-friendly affair, as it unfurls across 75,000 square metres of land. Some of these include replicas of iconic buildings in Maranello, the home town of Ferrari. Or as the press statement puts it "architectural references to the great monuments representing Italian genius".
It's predicted that 5 million visitors and more than a million overnight stays will be recorded at Ferrari Land in 2017. The price of admission to the shrine of the Prancing Horse has not been revealed, but Ferrari World in Abu Dhabi charges around $70 to get in.
