Fiat boss Sergio Marchionne has said a partnership with either General Motors or Ford would be “technically feasible” so long as the deal is “saving the highest amount of capital” on developing new vehicles.
Making the remarks in an interview with a journalist from Bloomberg, Marchionne’s refusal to rule out a technical partnership with either GM or Ford has led to wild speculation on the future of Fiat and Chrysler vehicles.
“We don’t have any restrictions,” Marchionne said in the revealing interview, but added there was “nothing substantive” currently on the table.
Marchionne has a past track record of joining forces with other car-makers and was the architect behind the merger of Fiat Chrysler Automobiles. Any such deal could see future Fords or Holdens share platforms and powertrains with Fiats and Chryslers.
Later on in the interview Marchionne remarked that he was less enthusiastic about a potential tie-up with the PSA Peugeot Citroen and said that he never discusses working together with the Volkswagen Group.
