Ford's performance car plans are hitting top gear as a number of tarmac warriors begin rolling out globally over the next 12 months – the GT supercar, Mustang and Focus RS to name a few. And that list could include a brand-new Fiesta RS.
This latest rendering shows how the new Ford Fiesta RS could look, complete with bonnet vents, more aggressive body kit, a lower ride, bigger wheels and wider stance, and could deliver Ford one of its most popular RS model ever.
Everything is hypothetical at present as Ford has made no official statements on the reality of the project, but if the 257kW Focus RS is a success – a likely scenario – plans for a more affordable, smaller Fiesta RS will gain momentum.
It's unlikely the car would adopt Ford's 184kW 2.0-litre turbo-petrol, instead packing a beefed-up version of the Fiesta ST's 1.6-litre turbo-petrol four-cylinder engine. That donk currently develops 134kW/240Nm (147kW/290Nm on overboost) but already there's a Mountune kit that ups that to 160kW/320Nm. And the technical genius contained within Ford's RS or Rallye Sport team would no doubt be able to reliably elevate that output.
Unlike all-wheel drive rivals such as the 170kW Audi S1 and upcoming 190kW Volkswagen Polo R, the Fiesta RS may remain front-wheel drive to maintain lower development costs (and purchase price).
Even so, things like a slippery diff, wider track and adjustable suspension would improve cornering dynamics and tyre traction, while weight-saving measures could be employed too.
Bigger brakes, firmer suspension and a beefed-up six-speed manual transmission would be likely, all of which should contribute to make the Fiesta a far more potent hot hatch – a vehicle which is now famous for slaying far more fancied machines in Australia's Best Driver's Cars. It finished fifth out of 15 sports cars.
If the Focus RS is a sell-out success, the Fiesta RS won't be far behind, and pricing could be circa $40,000.
