Geelong Revival set for this weekend

All is in readiness for the 2015 Geelong Revival, set for this weekend, November 27-29

2015's event represents the Revival's long tradition of speed trialling in Geelong in Victoria. It's held along the newly renovated waterfront precinct in Geelong.

The major drawcard is essentially centred around the Sprint component of the event where a timed quarter mile sees cars and motorcycles compete against the clock while an eager public watches on. In fact, 400 classic and exotic cars and motorcycles take their turn to sprint down iconic Ritchie Boulevard at full noise.

The event also caters for auto enthusiasts with all things vintage, from big corporate entities to backyard builders.

There'll be…
Shannons Classic Motorshow  at the Steampacket Gardens,
Motorcycle Mecca at Transvaal Square,
Revival Motor Expo,
Pit Access,
The Bowl Bar,
Live music on the Motor City Music Festival Stage, featuring Sammy Owen Blues Band (4pm),
Temperamental – A Tribute to Chrissy Amplett & the Divinyls (from 6pm),
National Vintage Fashion Awards – Open Section – 12pm to 1pm.

This year's theme is 'Wheels, Wings and Water' – taking the Festival to the sea and sky for the first time with classic motorboats and vintage fly overs.

The Geelong Waterfront will feature more than 600 valuable vehicles, and it kicks off Friday November 27 at 7pm with the City Cruise departing the Geelong Museum of Motoring, 13-35 Mackey Street North Geelong. Collectable vehicles of all makes, sizes and shapes will make their way to the Geelong CBD as they do a lap around town.

There's also a Fundraiser BBQ for the Cathy Freeman Foundation from 5pm. Entry into the City Cruise is via gold coin donation.

Motoring.com.au will be there in the form of contributor Greg Leech and his lightly worked 1975 Mk1 Escort Coupe. Leechy will take to the quarter mile Sprint Saturday. Of course, look for live Tweets from Motoring.com.au and web updates from the event.

The History of the Geelong Sprint
First run in 1956, The Geelong Sprints were founded by Murray Rainey, a prominent identity in the Geelong automotive industry and member of the Western District Car Club. A former F3 Champion (1956-58), Rainey modelled the original Geelong Sprints on the famous Brighton Speed Trials in the UK.

Keen to promote Geelong, Rainey was also instrumental in offering the local community a chance to see Australian motor sport identities competing in some of the most powerful and exotic sports and racing cars of the time.

Held on and around the Geelong Waterfront, the course is as picturesque as it is practical. The quarter-mile sprint is held along Ritchie Boulevard and the track is lined along one side by The Hill. Forming a natural grandstand, The Hill is where generations of locals have staked out ground to watch vehicles compete.

Relaunched in 1978 by the Vintage Sports Club of Victoria, the event was once again revived in 2012 with an emphasis on the past history of vintage motor sport, be it car and motorcycle racing; vintage caravans; car cruising; retro and vintage fashion – the Geelong Revival Motoring Festival is a celebration of motoring culture.

Over the years, competitors have included a significant number of national and international motor racing identities. These include Sir Jack Brabham, Sir Stirling Moss, Lex Davison, Tony Gaze, Bob Jane, Bib Stillwell, Norm Beechey, Doug Whiteford, Jim McKeown, John Harvey, Darcy Russell, Dick Johnson, Win Percy, Jim Richards, Glenn Seton, Craig Lowndes, Formula One champion Mika Hakkinen, Johnny Herbert, Pedro Lamy, Stan Jones and his son Alan. Alan Jones, the World Driver's Champion of 1980, launched his motor racing career at the 1964 event.
