GENEVA MOTOR SHOW: 10 best cars

This year's Swiss automotive extravaganza will go down in history as one of the highest-octane ever

Green cars with ever-decreasing CO2 numbers have been the dominant theme at most international motor shows – and especially European ones – for years now.

But not at this year's Salon de l'auto, where all of the established supercar brands and most of Europe's lesser-known ones turned up with more than enough firepower to waken Europe from its winter chill.

Here's our top 10.

Aston Martin Vulcan
Not content with revealing its menacing, limited-edition 7.0-litre V12 Vulcan track special, just 24 of which will be built, Aston also came out firing with its Vantage GT3 and the high-riding DBX crossover-coupe concept.

The German luxury giant's second-generation R8 formed the basis of not one but three radically different super-coupes at Geneva, including the 'standard' V10 Plus and the LMS sports car racer, but our pick is the e-tron, which can sprint to 100km/h in 3.9 seconds and travel for 450km without using a drop of petrol.

The oh-so-British luxury marque got down and dirty with a wild two-seat supercar concept that it says is entirely production feasible and is expected to be sold alongside the Continental GT.

It's essentially a midlife makeover for the 450 Italia coupe, but Ferrari's 488 GTB changes everything except its roof and packs a downsized turbocharged V8 with more performance and efficiency.

Glickenhaus SCG003
It wears a funny name but road and race versions of this hypercar are no joke, what with a kerb weight of just 1200kg, a 450kW/750Nm twin-turbo V6 and an even more powerful biturbo V12.

Yes, the Swedish supercar maker fronted at Geneva with not one but two new gob-smackers and while the track-focussed Agera RS is going after the Nurburgring lap record, the mad 1103kW/2000Nm Regera electric hypercar can hit 450km/h without a gearbox.

Lamborghini Aventador LP-750-4 Superveloce
Take Lambo's flagship hypercar, subtract weight and add even more power and this is what you get: a raging bull with an even longer name.

McLaren 675LT
The British supercar brand lobbed at Geneva with a 100kg-lighter (1230kg dry) version of the 650S, slamming out 497kW for just over $600,000.

Mercedes-AMG GT3
With the 'garden-variety' AMG GT on the way, it was time for Mercedes-AMG to reveal the race-ready GT3 version of its all-new AMG range-topper and in the hands of Benz CEO Dieter Zetsche it shook the Palexpo hall to its foundations when proceedings began at 8:00am.

Porsche 911 GT3 RS
Just when you thought Porsche's racer-for-the-road GT3 was about as finely honed as a 911 can get, along comes the RS with 368kW, 480Nm and the sharpest 911 chassis yet.
