Ingenium for Disco Sport

Advanced new diesel engine sips as little as 4.9L/100km, but remains at least 18 months away for Australians

Land Rover UK has released a new Ingenium diesel engine that lowers fuel consumption to just 4.9L/100km in the new Discovery Sport, but it won't be available here until late next year.

Launched earlier this month, the all-new Discovery Sport officially goes on sale in Australia this Friday (May 1) priced from $53,300.

When it does, it will be available in three equipment grades and with three engines, including two versions of Land Rover's long-running 2.2-litre four-cylinder turbo-diesel, which consumes 6.1L/100km in all five-seat automatic models and emits a minimum of 159g/km of CO2.

However, in the UK and Europe, where it is now available to order ahead of first customer deliveries in September, the new 2.0-litre Ingenium engine offers mileage of 57.7mpg (5.9L/100km) and emits 129g/km in the base Disco Sport TD4 150ps 4WD five-seat manual.

That makes the UK's cheapest Ingenium diesel-powered Disco Sport, which with outputs of 112kW and 380Nm delivers slightly more power but less torque than Australia's base 110kW/400Nm TD4, more efficient than the most frugal version of both Audi's top-selling Q5 (2.0 TDI: 6.1L/100km) and BMW's benchmark-setting X3 xDrive20d (5.2L/100km).

The UK's base 150ps also comes with low rolling resistance tyres on 18-inch wheels, longer final drive gearing and revised engine calibration.

There is also a high-output version of the new Euro 6 emissions-compliant all-aluminium oil-burner, with the 180ps (134kW) version producing 430Nm at the same 1750rpm while returning 53.3mpg (5.3L/100km) and emitting 139g/km of CO2 in seven-seat manual and automatic form.

That compares with 6.3L/100km and 166g/km for Australia's equivalent Disco Sport SD4 with nine-speed auto, which produces more power but less torque at 140kW/420Nm.

The new diesel will replace the current diesel engine offered in EU6 markets including the UK, where a new 'HSE Black' premium version of the Discovery Sport has also been added.

Also set to power the new Jaguar XE, it is the first Ingenium engine to appear from Jaguar Land Rover's new state-of-the-art £500m Engine Manufacturing Centre in the West Midlands, which is set to produce 450,000 Ingenium engines each year.

The Ingenium diesel features lightweight construction, stiff cylinder blocks, decoupled injectors, low internal friction, Selective Catalytic Reduction and a new low-pressure exhaust gas recirculation system to significantly reduce both CO2 and NOx emissions.

"Land Rover's new family of Ingenium engines is truly class leading," said Director of Land Rover Programmes, Australian-born Murray Dietsch.

"By introducing it to the Discovery Sport, we can now offer enhanced fuel economy and reduced CO2 emissions, while improving overall performance. The Ingenium engine confirms Discovery Sport's position as the most versatile and capable compact premium SUV in the world."
